Target ROAS Smart Bidding

Google's Target ROAS automatically adjusts bids to achieve your desired return.

Based on your current ROAS, we suggest setting Target ROAS to

3.60×

How to Set Target ROAS in Google Ads
  1. 1Calculate your current ROAS using this tool
  2. 2Set Target ROAS slightly below current (e.g., 90% of current)
  3. 3Go to Google Ads → Campaign Settings → Bidding
  4. 4Select 'Target ROAS' as your bid strategy
  5. 5Enter your target value and save

💡 Start conservative—setting Target ROAS too high limits reach. You can always increase it later.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this calculator to evaluate your Google Ads campaign ROI — whether you are running Search, Shopping, Display, or Performance Max campaigns. It is particularly valuable when deciding whether to increase your daily budget, comparing performance across campaign types, or preparing a monthly performance report. If you use Target ROAS bidding in Google Ads, compare your actual ROAS here against your target to see if the algorithm is hitting its goal.

How to Read Your Results

A Google Ads ROAS of 5x means each dollar of ad spend generated five dollars in tracked revenue. Keep in mind that Google's default attribution uses last-click, which may over-credit Search campaigns and under-credit Display. If your ROAS looks surprisingly high, check whether you are double-counting revenue from users who would have purchased organically. For Shopping campaigns, subtract COGS from revenue before celebrating a high ROAS — a 10x ROAS on a 5% margin product is still barely profitable.

Google Ads Benchmarks by Campaign Type

ROAS varies significantly by campaign type. Compare your performance:

Campaign TypeAverage ROASGood ROASNotes
Search2-4×4×+High intent, users actively searching
Shopping4-8×8×+Product listings, best for e-commerce
Display1-2×2×+Brand awareness, lower direct ROAS
Video/YouTube1.5-3×3×+Brand storytelling, mid-funnel
Performance Max3-5×5×+AI-optimized across all channels

Shopping campaigns typically have the highest ROAS due to high purchase intent. Data based on Google Ads industry reports (2023-2024).

Google Ads ROAS Formula

Google Ads ROAS = Conversion Value ÷ Ad Spend

If you spent $1,000 on Google Ads and generated $4,000 in conversion value, your ROAS is 4× (or 400%)

ROAS Percentage = (Conversion Value ÷ Ad Spend) × 100%

Suggested Target ROAS = Current ROAS × 0.9 (conservative approach)

How to Improve Your Google Ads ROAS

Use Smart Bidding Strategies

Enable Target ROAS or Maximize Conversion Value bidding. Let Google's AI optimize bids in real-time.

2

Review Search Terms Report

Check weekly for irrelevant search terms. Add negative keywords aggressively to reduce wasted spend.

3

5
